Free Internet Download Manager gives you control over Web downloads through scheduling, prioritization, batching and a number of other features.

Anyone who downloads many files from the Web will find Free Internet Download Manager to be a powerful tool. This program can work on its own or alongside a web browser. Its primary purpose is download scheduling, which is convenient when you have many files to download or want to avoid peak time on your connection. The program supports batches as well, and you can arrange files and projects.

The program uses filters in order to recognize file formats. For instance, Free Internet Download Manager knows that GIF and JPG files are image files and can thus sort those files into folder assigned for images. This is true for audio, video and many other file types as well. Archives are supported too, and the program can open archives and even sort files into compressed folders.

You can provide Free Internet Download Manager a direct link to a resource you want, but the program is capable of exploring a website structure, and you can use it to capture images, video and music that a website may not expose directly. The software even gives you the option of downloading an entire website. You can also configure Free Internet Download Manager to keep that local copy of the website current, and it will it download changes on a schedule.

In addition to scheduling downloads and being able to download files concurrently, Free Internet Download Manager can download different segments of a single file concurrently. Not all servers will support such behavior but most do. This is how the program can maximize your download speed when a server is capping each individual connection artificially.

The ability to handle downloads in a segmented manner makes pausing and resuming possible. You can use pause and resume manually, but Free Internet Download Manager uses it itself to facilitate scheduling, prioritization and so forth. Another benefit is being able to repair damaged files. The program can fix them by downloading just the damaged segments and not the entire file.

Free Internet Download Manager provides a lot of tools and features, and it packs all of them into a menu structured that may seem dated by current standards. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s a highly functional UI, and many users will appreciate that. However, it may seem a bit overwhelming to the new user, but it’s certainly a learning curve worth overcoming.

Pros

  • Plan and prioritize your downloads
  • Pause and resume downloads
  • Fix corrupt downloads
